The gleaming power and dark, burnished timbre of Andreas Bauer Kanabas’ commanding bass voice, along with his extraordinary dramatic expressiveness, thrill audiences and critics alike, on opera and concert stages around the world.

An exceptionally versatile artist, he has starred in such varied repertoire as King Philip II/Don Carlo (in both Italian and the original French), the title role in Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle, Méphisto/Faust, Vodnik/Rusalka, Gremin/Yevgény Onégin, Claggart/Billy Budd, Da Silva/Ernani, Fiesco/Simon Boccanegra, Zaccaria/Nabucco, King Mark/Tristan und Isolde, Landgraf Hermann/Tannhäuser, Commendatore/Don Giovanni, Osmin/Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and Escamillo/Carmen.

He performs on international stages including the Vienna Staatsoper, Royal Opera House London, Opéra Bastille de Paris, The Bolshoi in Moscow, Teatro Real Madrid, Seattle Opera, Teatro Municipal Santiago de Chile, the New National Opera Tokyo, Opéra de Lyon, Riga National Opera, Semperoper Dresden, and the Berlin Staatsoper.

In addition, he has been a member of the solo ensemble of the Frankfurt Opera since 2013.

In 2020, during the worldwide Covid19 shutdown, Andreas Bauer Kanabas was very fortunate to be able to perform as Vodnik/Rusalka at the Teatro Real Madrid. Concerts as Rocco / Fidelio with Jonas Kaufmann were a great success in summer 2022.

In the 22/23 season he made his debut as Pogner in Wagner’s Meistersinger at the Frankfurt Opera and also sang this role at the Spring Festival in Tokyo and under Christian Thieleman at the Semperoper Dresden. As De Silva in Verdi’s Ernani, he guested in Antwerp and Ghent. He made his very successful debut as Baron Ochs / Rosenkavalier at the Irish National Opera in Dublin.

In September 2021, his highly acclaimed solo CD Love and Despair (OhemsClassics) was released with Romantic bass arias, conducted by Karsten Januschke. In February 2023 his first, highly praised song CD was released – Franz Schubert’s Schwanengesang with Daniel Heide as pianist.

Andreas Bauer Kanabas sang many important debuts in 2019, including PhilippeII/Don Carlo (in French) in Antwerp and Ghent, Padre Guardiano/La forza del destino in Frankfurt, Escmillio/Carmen at The Bolshoi in Moscow and Alfonso d’Este/Lucrezia Borgia in Toulouse. During the worldwide Covid19 shutdown in 2020, he had the great fortune to perform at the Teatro Real Madrid as Vodnik/Rusalka.

Sarastro, a role he has sung to great acclaim in Paris, Frankfurt, Berlin, Dresden, Budapest, Adelaide, Perth, Auckland and Abu Dhabi, was the vehicle of his debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. He made a great Festival d’Opéra de Québec debut as Daland in Der fliegende Holländer, a role he has also taken to the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Frankfurt Opera, and the Auditorio Music Madrid, where he performed alongside Sir Bryn Terfel.

He returned successfully to the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 2019 as King Heinrich in Lohengrin, the role of his debuts at both the Vienna Staatsoper and the New National Theatre in Tokyo.

Andreas debuted as Méphistophélès in Faust at the Latvian National Opera in Riga in 2016. He was immediately reengaged for the 2018 season, as Zaccaria/Nabucco and as De Silva/Ernani, a role he will repeat in concert at Moscow’s Tchaikowsky Concert Hall in 2019 under the baton of Daniel Oren again.

2016 also saw important debuts at Teatro alla Scala, in Mozart’s Requiem, and at Munich’s Gasteig, in the Verdi Requiem. His performance as the Hermit/Der Freischütz  from the Semperoper Dresden, under the direction of Christian Thielemann, is available on DVD from Unitel Classica.

In addition to the Requiems of Verdi, Mozart and Brahms, Andreas’s concert credits include Schumann’s Manfred with the Berlin Philharmonic under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Schumann’s Scenes from Faust in the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, and Haydn’s Die Schöpfung for Switzerland’s Verbier Festival. 

His ELIAS with the WDR Symphony Orchestra was broadcast live from the Cologne Philharmonic in 2016, and the concert version of Bártok’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle in 2019.
Andreas can be heard in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in major concert halls, with live broadcasts from the Tokyo Suntory Hall, the Osaka Festival Hall, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Cologne Philharmonic, among others. Under the direction of Marek Janowski he sings the solo bass in a complete Pentatone recording of all Beethoven symphonies.

Andreas has had the honor of collaborating with many of the world’s greatest conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Sir Colin Davis, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Daniel Oren, Ivan Fischer, Ádám Fischer, Andris Nelsons, Philppe Jordan, Pier Giorgio Morandi, Ingo Metzmacher, Gustavo Dudamel, Sebastian Weigle, and Christian Thielemann.

Andreas Bauer Kanabas studied voice with Prof. Eugen Rabine in Weimar and later with Paolo Barbacini in Italy, Robert Lloyd in London and Robert Gonnella in Toulouse.

As a song interpreter, Andreas Bauer Kanabas works closely with the pianist Daniel Heide. His special thanks also go to Peter Frank in Weimar, who has accompanied him competently as a vocal coach, mentor and friend for over 20 years.
